Meet Some of Our HUGS Families

Higa Family
In 2016, then 3-year old Nainoa was taken to the emergency room after experiencing a lot of physical problems. Nainoa was suffering from cancerous tumors in his stomach - in which the surgeon removed as many as he could, but there were still too many and was diagnosed with state 4 Rhabdomyosarcoma. The oncology team said that Nainoa's chances of survival were slim.

Leong Family
In 2019, Kaydee was found to have a tumor in her proximal fibula, after experiencing pain and swelling in her leg. Her doctor diagnosed her with metastatic osteosarcoma, and further scans revealed additional tumors in her distal tibia and right lung.

Akiu Family
Lilian was born with a congenital heart defect, her heart didn’t develop completely in the womb and required multiple open-heart surgeries, with the first one being when Lilian was just 7 days old.

Tanaka Family
“It hit us hard at our 20-week ultrasound when we found out that our unborn child had a severe heart defect called tricuspid atresia, which basically means that Anchor was born with half of a heart,” said mom. Anchor was also neutropenic (lack of white blood cells) to fight off infection.

Judah was born a healthy baby, however after four months things started to change. He was diagnosed with Infantile Spasms, a seizure disorder which can be life-threatening. So he has been on various treatments since.
