Help Make a Difference

Donate

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to support Hawaii’s seriously ill children and their families. Your donation will enable us to continue to provide the programs and services our HUGS families desperately need. Because there is no cost for our families to receive access to our services, we depend on supporters like you to ensure our HUGS families won’t have to face their journey alone as they care for a seriously ill child.

  • If you have a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) giving account, making a gift through your DAF is a powerful way to support HUGS and help families who are struggling with the challenges of caring for a child with a life-threatening illness. By leaving a legacy gift, you can ensure our families are served by HUGS not just today but well into the future. You’ll be helping to secure our future as an organization for generations to come. You’ll also ensure HUGS will be able to continue our mission of strengthening Hawaii’s families and improving their quality of life as they face the emotional and financial hardships of caring for a seriously ill child.

What is Legacy Giving?

A planned gift or "legacy" gift is any gift made as part of your estate planning. With a legacy gift, you’ll be assured your philanthropic interest in HUGS continues beyond your lifetime. These gifts offer tax benefits while providing you the opportunity to make a lasting difference for Hawaii's families. Your legacy gift can take many forms. The most common type is a bequest in your will or trust. A bequest is revocable, which means you’re able to change it any time. With a bequest, you may bequeath a specific amount of money or a percentage of your estate.

Making a Bequest

Here is sample bequest language to include in your will or trust:

I hereby bequeath to HUGS, Federal Tax ID number 99-0213594, the sum of $_______ (or percentage) of my estate, both real and personal, to be used by HUGS to further its mission.

Gifts of Life Insurance and Retirement Accounts

You may also list HUGS among the beneficiaries on a life insurance policy or a retirement account.

A gift of life insurance allows you to make a modest gift now for a significant gift in the future for HUGS. If you’re still carrying a life insurance policy you or your family no longer needs, please consider donating it to HUGS. If you transfer ownership of your paid-up insurance policy by naming HUGS as the irrevocable owner and beneficiary, you’ll receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction based on the current value of the policy.

Naming HUGS as a beneficiary of your IRA or other retirement plan is one of the most tax effective gifts you can make. If you’re 70½ years old or older, an IRA charitable rollover allows you to make a tax-free, outright gift to HUGS using your traditional IRA or Roth IRA.

Gift of Securities

Gifts of securities can be an excellent alternative to cash gifts, making a huge difference for Hawaii’s families with seriously ill children and providing while providing you with tax benefits. By donating your appreciated stocks, bonds, mutual funds or other securities to HUGS, you can avoid the capital gains taxes that would be required if you were to sell the security and donate cash.

Please consult with your financial adviser on the various options and tax advantages of planned giving and finding one that’s best for your situation. Call our Development Director at 808-380-6924 for more information about making a planned gift to HUGS. By notifying us now about your planned giving intent, we'll be able to thank you appropriately and make sure your wishes are honored.
